Epic Top 5 Sonic Games

Sonic the Hedgehog has been rolling around at the speed of sound for over 25 years!! Can you believe that!! A franchise that was once at the top of the world, has not seen as much success with its more recent titles. Last night I was streaming Sonic Adventure 2 (video found below). So, I thought it would be really cool to have a look at some of the greatest Sonic games of all time!! Before I get started here are some honorable mentions: Sonic Adventure, Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Generations.

5. Sonic CD

This game is truly amazing. It was the flagship game for the SEGA CD. Boy oh boy, this game did not disappoint. With it’s crisp fast paced side scrolling gameplay, vibrant colors and catchy sound track there is nothing to dislike about this game. Not to mention this game introduced the “figure 8” spin dash technique which looks so cool!! But above all else this game introduced one of my personal favorite Sonic villains METAL SONIC!! Just look at that picture up there. This dude is no joke. He has super speed, flight, chaos energy absorption and can fire laser beams!! What more could you want?!

4. Sonic the Hedgehog

There is no way I can compile a top 5 list without listing the granddaddy of them all. Once again, a flagship game for the original SEGA Genesis, this game took the world by storm! Never has there been such fast-paced, side scrolling action! Everybody loved this game, I know for sure that I did. This game received critics scores of an average of 90/100 that was borderline unheard of! Over the course of all its releases, this game has sold over 43,000,000 copies. Wow that’s an impact. This game was countless hours of fun. (Well at least until your genesis overheated) And who can forget the sound track to the Marble Zone. Oh boy if you have never heard it, you need to check it out for sure. That’s just tip of the ice cap for this classic.

3. Sonic 2

Where do I even start? Oh yea two words…..SUPER SONIC!! This game introduced one of the most iconic in game transformations of all time. For those who don’t know (I don’t know how you wouldn’t know) once you collect all 7 chaos emeralds, collect 50 rings, and jump. You will become an invincible super being that flies at super sonic speeds destroying all in your way, and it is AWESOME!!! To get the emeralds, you must do this crazy ring collecting bonus stage. I still have nightmares about it. Check out the awesome picture up there. As you can see there is a little yellow annoying creature behind Sonic. That is a two-tailed fox named Tails. He’s really annoying in this game, but he has his usefulness at times. This game introduced character selection. You can choose to play with just Sonic, just tails or with the duo, that is pretty sweet.

2. Sonic Adventure 2

One of the greatest games, for one of the most underrated game systems of all time the SEGA DREAMCAST. A sequel to the smash hit Sonic Adventure, this game takes things to a new level. With compelling story telling, awesome collectibles and really cool new characters, especially the fan favorite; Shadow the Hedgehog. Look at him in the picture above, looking all smug and cool. It raised the bar on video game story telling. You were able to choose two stories; The Heroes or The Villains. You will be able to see the two different perspectives of what is really going on and be able to fully understand the conflict between them. I won’t spoil anything here, but the story is super cool. If you had the Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the GameCube, you would be able to go head to with your friends in three different battle modes. You were able to race with the speed characters, do treasure hunts with the hunters, and try to blow each other to pieces in the battle mode. And the two-player mode allowed even more playable characters including Amy Rose, the light and dark chao babies, Chaos, Tikal and my personal favorite METAL SONIC!!! This was truly and adventure to remember.

1. Sonic 3

By far the greatest Sonic game for Sega Genesis. Arguably the greatest Sonic game of all time. Let’s rundown how epic this game was. The soundtrack on this game is like the greatest of all time. In fact, it was rumored that Michael Jackson himself composed the music. The stages are so colorful and vivid. The gameplay is extremely engaging. Emerald collection bonus stages are very challenging but extremely fun. But above all else for the first time you can save your progress!!! Can you imagine not having to beat a game in one run? Do you know how awesome that was! Not to mention this was the first Sonic game with post-game gameplay. After beating the game, you can return to any stage you want and play it, that was incredible! So, basically if you collected all 7 emeralds already (or didn’t) you can go back to a stage, collect the emeralds and use Super Sonic and become all powerful!! But the awesomeness doesn’t stop there. If you had the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge, you can combine the two cartridges and make one mega game!! So, after beating Sonic 3 you will start playing Sonic and Knuckles and you will keep all your emeralds and your progress!! How awesome is that!! This truly deserves the top spot on this list.

So, what do you think about this list? What’s your favorite Sonic game? Let me know in the comment section below.
